Water Resources. Svishtov Municipality has considerable water resources. Although bordering to it, the Danube is of great importance to the municipality. There are hardly any other rivers flowing through its territory. The existing small and short creeks and rivulets are only full of water in the spring, when the snow is melting or there is heavier precipitation. In immediate proximity to them, in the ravines and gullies, there are numerous water springs well known to, and commonly used, by the local population. Considerable amounts of underground water have accumulated in the Belene and Vardim lowlands at 0.5-1.5 m below the surface. They constitute the principal water source for the town and the settlements in the municipality. The waters in the deeper underground layers have still not been fully analyzed. There are some mineral water springs in the municipality, as well. In the village of Ovcha Mogila the mineral water has a temperature of 45 degrees Celsius and high concentration of chlorine, sulphate, sodium, calcium, and fluorine compounds. The existing spa and water treatment establishments treat disorders of the locomotory system, neurological, gynecological, and gastrointestinal, gall bladder and liver, and other diseases and disorders.
